Vertical lift modules, also called VLM, are revolutionizing the way parts of all kinds are stored. The advantages of vertical lift modules, or VLM, are numerous. MSK Canada is proud to offer you the complete service of analysis, supply, installation and IT integration of VLM throughout Canada.

What is an automatic vertical storage magazine, or VLM?

By definition, a vertical lift module, or VLM, is a storage unit that operates under the “goods to person” principle, i.e., the products go to the operator and not the other way around, like a traditional racking system. The vertical lift module, or VLM, is composed of columns where trays are stored one above the other. From a console, the operator can select the desired products and the central elevator of the VLM begins to move to retrieve the tray where the desired product is located to bring it to the window where the operator can take the desired quantity. If the VLM is integrated with the company’s warehouse management system (WMS), the inventory is automatically adjusted.

What are the advantages of an automatic vertical storage magazine, or VLM?

The advantages of a vertical lift module are numerous.

Space saving

By using the vertical space of the building, the VLM saves up to 90% of space compared to a parts store equipped with traditional metal shelving. Eliminating circulation aisles, maximizing the space between products and using the height available in your warehouse are among the factors that allow such significant space savings.

Improved picking rate

Thanks to the “goods to person” principle of the VLM, the operator no longer moves through the storage aisles. First, the part is brought to him faster than he could have done on his own. Second, he no longer has to search for the right part through cardboard or plastic boxes. Vertical lift modules, or VLM, that have a “pick to light” system make it easier to identify the right part to pick up by illuminating it with a light beam. This increased productivity allows more orders to be prepared each day.

Improved inventory tracking

A vertical lift module, or VLM, ensures the safety and cleanliness of parts by keeping them in a closed and secure environment. The trays with dividers keep the parts in their respective locations which avoids inventory imbalances. But the biggest advantage is real-time inventory tracking, as picks are made. A vertical lift module can be operated standalone, but our integration team can connect it to your ERP or WMS to increase its efficiency.

Space saving

By using the vertical space of the building, the VLM saves up to 90% of space compared to a parts store equipped with traditional metal shelving. Eliminating circulation aisles, maximizing the space between products and using the height available in your warehouse are among the factors that allow such significant space savings.

Improved safety

The ergonomic position of the picking window of the vertical lift module speeds up picking, but also makes it safer. No more climbing on a stool or a ladder to reach the products placed at the bottom of a deep shelf. No need to bend over to reach products stored too low. Since the products present themselves automatically to the operator, movements are greatly reduced, which diminishes fatigue and stress.
