What Is A Drive-In Racking System?

A drive-in storage system is a pallet rack system built with storage lanes, support rails and a structural rack configuration.

The lift truck enters the lane to load or unload pallets placed several positions deep.

This type of drive-in pallet racking system generally follows a LIFO, or last-in, first-out, logic. It is especially useful when stock rotation is predictable and when the priority is to maximize the number of pallets stored per square foot.

When Should You Use Drive In Racking In A Warehouse?

Drive in racking is most relevant when your operations manage large volumes of identical products. It works well for stable inventories, seasonal goods or products stored by batch.

Because forklifts are constantly driving through the racking, the risk of damage is high. You will therefore need to ensure that the shelving uprights are adequately protected and carry out frequent inspections.

Choosing The Right Drive-In Or Drive-Through Racking Configuration

Drive-in and drive-through pallet racking do not support the same flow. Drive-in systems are typically used for LIFO storage, while drive-through configurations can support FIFO, or first-in, first-out, when loading and unloading happen from opposite sides.
