Unloading materials onto your roof must be carried out with safety in mind. Whether using a forklift or a lifting jib, there are inherent risks. Setting up an unloading area with a sliding gate can streamline the process and significantly enhance safety.

Why install a sliding gate?

Lifting equipment onto your roof is a task that involves working near the roof’s edge. The flagman or the worker receiving the equipment must maintain clear visual communication with their colleague on the ground. It is crucial that the worker is protected from falls during this operation. A sliding gate offers fall protection while lifting the equipment and creates an opening to allow a pallet or other large items to pass through the guardrail.

When using a forklift to lift equipment onto the roof, the opening enables the pallet to be placed directly on the roof’s surface. Moreover, the sliding gate can be closed behind the load, allowing the worker to handle the material without being at risk of falling.

The benefit of the sliding gate over a pivoting gate is that it can be closed without obstructing the material or requiring the material to be moved once it’s on the roof.

Where to install a sliding gate?

A sliding gate can be installed on any flat roof requiring periodic maintenance. If your building includes a lifting jib, a sliding gate should be a standard consideration. The Delta Prevention sliding gate is installed without any drilling on the roof edge, regardless of whether there is a parapet.

Sliding gate features

Operation Area

The 20′ operation zone offers a secure spot for the employee responsible for opening and closing the gate. Sliding the gate to the left creates an opening in the loading area. It is crucial to stay within the operation or flagger area while loading and unloading.

Unloading Zone

The 10’ wide by 5’ deep unloading zone is designed to receive bulk material or palletized goods. It is important to avoid standing in the unloading area when the gate is open. Once the gate is closed, employees can safely access the material. The barrier complies with the guardrail standards set by the National Building Code.

National Building Code Compliant

When closed, the sliding gate complies with the load requirements outlined in article 4.1.5.14 of the National Building Code for permanent guardrails. The two adjacent guardrails also adhere to these same standards.

Sliding gate maintenance

The sliding gate is a durable, moving component built to last for many years. To ensure its optimal performance, it is recommended to regularly lubricate the GA161-01 connectors using the lubricant provided with the gate.
